Headquarters to the Southern Highland Craft Guild and the country’s oldest-running craft shop, the Folk Art Center offers the public a look at the process of both traditional and contemporary handmade craft in the Appalachian region. Daily craft demonstrations take place in the lobby, and the craft shop features work by member-artisans of the Southern Highland Craft Guild, a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving Appalachian craft. On the second level of the center, visitors will find 3 exhibition spaces, a museum of an international craft collection, and a library of American craft. The Folk Art Center is free to enter and open daily, 10am-5pm. Throughout the year, the Guild hosts 9 special events in the Center’s auditorium in an effort to educate the public on the practice of handmade craft. In addition to the Folk Art Center, there are 2 retail locations in Asheville, NC where visitors can shop (Tunnel Road and Biltmore Village). There are also two Craft Fairs of the Southern Highlands held each year in downtown Asheville (July and October).
